The holds of Skyrim

Skyrim has nine holds that would work as counties in the real world. Each of the holds has a Jarl (pronounced Yarl). The Jarls could be compared to kings in our world. Even though they are under the authority of the king of Skyrim they govern over their holds and deal with any local issues. As you can see in the map above the holds all have their own borders.  The nine holds are:

This is the sign of Falkreath. This hold is known for its massive cemetery.

This is the sign of Solitude. This hold is where the king and queen of Skyrim would stay. Solitude is also known for its massive windmill.

This is the sign of Whiterun. This hold is the central trade hub for all of Skyrim. Whiterun is the first hold that the Dragonborn encounters on his journey.

This is the sign of Windhelm. Windhelm was the first hold to be established in Skyrim. It is known as the city of kings.

This is the sign of Markarth. Markarth is known best for its abundance of silver mines. Most travelers are skeptical of Markarth. They claim that Markarth has a corrupt political system.

This is the sign of  Riften. Riften is home to the Thieves guild. While many citizens will deny their existance, the Thieves guild is one of the strongest criminal groups in Skyrim

This is the sign of Winterhold. Very little remains of Winterhold after the great earthquake. Winterhold is known for the college of Winterhold. A school for  young mages to go to and hone their skills

This is the sign of  Dawnstar. Dawnstar is one of the most unfortunate holds in all of Skyrim. It has recently been affected by a plague of nightmares, courtesy of a daedric prince.

This is the sign of  Morthal. Morthal is the most mysterious of all the holds. The hold is suspectted to be harboring vampires.
